Chocolat, de boisson à la praline
Healthy chocolate
The fat, heavy and indigestible chocolate of former centuries has been replaced by a totally
different product : cocoa powder, the basis for a healthy and nutritious breakfast, while
adults and children enjoy the ultimate sweet, the chocolate bar. Thanks to the increasing
technical devices, the Belgian chocolate does not only lead the market in its own country but
conquers also the foreign markets.
Chocolate pralines
The Duke of Plessis-Praslin (1598-1675), Ambassador of Louis XIII, asked during the battle
against Bordolais to create a delicacy as to distract the rebels. When he noticed a cook’s boy
scraping together the rest of melted sugar, he got the idea of a praline. In 1912, this praline is
sold in the shops.
Democratic chocolate
In the beginning of the 20th century, chocolate becomes available for everybody. Children are the new
target group. Chocolate is no longer an exception but rather a rule of living and it is impossible to
imagine life today without chocolate.
Daskalidès chocolate
In 1931, a Greek couple Daskalidès-Kestikidès opens a confectionary in the centre of Ghent.
Their home made pralines are of such a quality that Daskalidès quite fast belongs to one of the most
famous chocolatiers. In 1987, Daskalidès is rewarded with the prestigious Laurier d’Or de la
Qualité thanks to the exceptional quality of chocolate, the beautiful shape and the exquisite
taste.
The Renaissance
During the new millennium Daskalidès is launched as being the reference in the world of the
chocolate. The introduction of a new shop concept leads to a stronger positioning of the brand.
The range expands with new, daring creations such as chocolate bars with cinnamon, ginger,
coriander or peppers. The image of Daskalidès remains: only for connoisseurs.
